Overview: This trail hikes along the rim and mesa west of Wildcat Canyon, rather than inside the canyon itself. Babbling brooks, wide fields of tall grass and wild blossoms, and bird's-eye views of Wildcat and Great West canyons make this trail magical. A great opportunity for solitude in a wild landscape.
Trailhead: From Springdale, drive west on SR 9 through Rockville and into Virgin (15 minutes). Just after the Zion River Resort, turn right on the Kolob Terrace road. Drive north for 16 miles, past exquisite scenery, until you reach the posted Wildcat Canyon trailhead (on your right). If you plan to hike this trail one-way, spot a vehicle at the Lava Point trailhead (see West Rim Trail description) before you hit the trail OR arrange a shuttle.
Mileage: 6.0 miles (9.7 km), one-way
Elevation Gain: 600 feet (182 m)
Approximate Hike Time: 3 - 4 hours, one-way
Difficulty: Moderate
Best Times of Day: This trail is great any time of day. At 7000+ feet, the rim of Wildcat Canyon is much cooler than Zion Canyon (4200), usually by 10 - 20 degrees Farenheit.
Best Times of Year: April through October, Wildcat Canyon provides cool temperatures and stunning scenery. November through March, the trail is often covered in snow and/or ice. Check conditions before going in the winter or early spring.
Crowds: A few friendly encounters, but you are largely on your own
Water Sources: A spring-fed creek runs along portions of Wildcat Canyon year-round. Check at the Backcountry Desk to verify the creek is running. Purify all water for your safety.
Camping: After the Wildcat Canyon trail splits off from the Northgate Peaks trail, both sides of the trail carry an "open camping" designation. In this area, backpackers may camp anywhere at least 200 yards away from all trails and water sources. A permit is still required to camp in this area, obtainable at the Backcountry Desk in the Visitor's Center.
Don’t Miss:
- Study the depths of Wildcat and Great West canyons, where bold explorers venture for burly off-trail routes through heavy brush, secret slots, and ice-cold waters. If the idea sparks your interest, inquire at Zion Adventure Company when you get back to town.
