Overview: This foray into Zion's riparian backcountry wilderness makes for a great day hike or over-night trip (permit required). A seldom traveled trail, hikers find quiet side canyons and a series of serene pools and waterfalls along the upper reaches of the creek. The "trail" is sometimes a clearly defined path; other times, the trail fades and the stream bed is the most reliable and passable route. Canyoneering shoes make the wet hiking and moderate boulder negotiations of the Right Fork easier and more carefree.
Trailhead: From Springdale, drive west on SR 9 through Rockville and into Virgin (15 minutes). Just after the Zion River Resort, turn right on the Kolob Terrace road. Drive 6.9 miles (11.1 km) north to the trailhead, on the right-hand side of the road. Park in the small, marked parking lot tucked behind the juniper trees.
Mileage: 14 miles (22.3 km)
Elevation Gain: 1000 feet (305 m)
Approximate Hike Time: 6 - 8 hours, round-trip
Difficulty: Moderate. Some mild route-finding and scrambling required.
Best Times of Day: As a day hike, Right Fork requires almost an entire day. Leave early in during summer (6-8am) to enjoy the pools in the heat of the day and return in the late afternoon.
Best Times of Year: Due to frequent stream crossings, most people prefer to hike Right Fork during summer. Though the water becomes colder, the west-facing canyon enjoys warm afternoon sun in spring and fall, accenting springtime blossoms or golden cottonwoods, depending on the season. Winter months (December - March) often find Right Fork icy and snow-packed.
Crowds: Unlikely
Water Sources: Spring-fed North Creek provides year-round water along the length of the trail. Water is not safe for drinking until purified.
Camping: Good camp spots abound along this trail. Out of courtesy to other hikers, please camp at least 200 yards away from any trail or water source. Over-night backcountry permits are available at the Visitor's Center near Springdale.
Don’t Miss:
- Two significant waterfalls, Double Falls and Barrier Falls, are the gems of this hike. Barrier Falls ultimately blocks further passage upstream, creating the turn-around point on this hike.
- Look for the remnants of old corrals near Trail Canyon, a north-facing canyon 1.3 miles past the confluence of the Left and Right Forks.
Special Notes:
- Check the weather carefully before heading out on Right Fork, known for its powerful flash floods when summer thunderstorms roll through Zion.
- Watch for poison ivy along the trails near Double Falls, a great opportunity for self-punishment.
