Red Rock Climbers Camp
  Back
build a solid foundation for vertical freedom

We designed Red Rock Climbing Camp to help novice and intermediate climbers gain the skills and knowledge to perform in any climbing environment. Covering a focused breadth of fundamental curricula, we build the foundation of knowledge, ability, confidence, and vision needed for self-guided rock climbing. After five days on the rock, students see body movement in a very different way; concepts of balance, center of gravity, and friction take on higher meanings. Students graduate from this course with a solid understanding of climbing essentials; afterward, most feel comfortable climbing with experienced friends, climbing on their own at a gym, or even leading their own rock climbing outings .

PREREQUISITES
»• No prior experience required • Excitement and intrigue about rock climbing
CURRICULUM
»Following is a sample curriculum. The composition of the camp participants will ultimately define each day. As a participant in this event, you have significant influence over the technical skills sets we learn and the locations we practice and climb in. This process is well-facilitated and guides are highly skilled and able to manage large variations in participant experience. Day 1: Fundamentals of Rock Climbing - On our first day together, we introduce or review skills and concepts central to climbing rock. Once established, we will carry these ideas throughout the course, expanding on them as you gain confidence and competence. • Orientation to harnesses, rope, carabiners, and other basic equipment • Essential knots and hitches • Building safety systems and back-ups • Belaying top-rope and lead climbers • Terminology and communication for climbers and belayers • Tying into a rope system • Rappelling • Climbing single-pitch, top-rope routes • Basic body movement and mechanics • Competency Theory Day 2: Establishing Anchors and Managing Risk - During our second day, we focus on technical aspects of the climbing system and do a lot more climbing. We learn how to inspect various types of anchors for safety and practice building our own bolted and natural anchor systems. Between climbing routes, we introduce common problems climbers encounter and the basic self-rescue solutions used to solve them. • Building and inspecting top-rope anchor systems - Natural anchors - Fixed anchors - Traditional placements - Equalization theory • Introduction to self-rescue techniques - Top-anchor belays - Ascending ropes - Single rope rappel - Lowering another climber • Variable difficulty single-pitch climbing Day 3: Body Mechanics, Climbing Techniques, and Multi-Pitch Climbing - After climbing shorter routes on the first two days, we set our sights on longer, taller routes. As the climbing becomes more involved and committing, you take on more responsibility for moving your body with care and seeing more possibilities in each moment on the rock. Competent learners are often amazed at what they understand by Day Three. • Advancing body movement • Managing energy while climbing • "Reading" routes • Effective footwork techniques • Introduction to multi-pitch climbing and rappelling • Rope organization and management • Problem-solving workshop Days 4 & 5: Climbing, Climbing, and More Climbing - With a wealth of theory and practice under our harness belts, we spend two less-structured days climbing routes of various difficulties and styles, according to group interest. We focus on application and practice with techniques and concepts from Days 1-3, with in-situ workshops taking place, as needed. Days 4 and 5 will give opportunity to break into small groups and achieve some longer classic routes in the Red Rock side canyons climbing multi-pitch routes of varying difficulty ratings
EXPERIENCE
»Climbing 3-6 routes each day, you have ample opportunity to learn new skills and apply them immediately, quickly empowering you to achieve higher levels of understanding and ability. We mix technical theory in equally with application to provide an engaging, balanced experience. • Full-spectrum introduction to top-rope, sport, and traditional climbing • 90\\\% hands-on learning environment • Identifying and solving technique problems • Fun and challenging climbs for your level • Professional and constructive "classroom"
