Pa' Rus Trail
  Back

Overview: This is the easiest trail in the Park, and the only one which allows leashed dogs and bikes. The Pa’ Rus meanders north from the campgrounds, following the Virgin River up the wide valley of south Zion Canyon. This is a perfect trail for after-dinner strolls, surrounding you with grand towers cast in brilliant oranges, browns, and reds by the evening alpenglow.

Trailhead: No shuttle necessary. Park just before the South Entrance OR at the Visitor’s Center for a slightly shorter walk to the South Campground, where the trail begins.

Mileage: 3.5 miles (5.6 km), round-trip

Elevation Gain: Very little change

Approximate Hike Time: 1. 5 hours, round-trip

Difficulty: Very easy

Best Times of Day:
- In the summer, hike the Pa’ Rus in the early morning or early evening. Once the campground lights have dimmed, walk along the Pa’ Rus for a starry hike before bed.

- Fall through Spring, anytime is a good one for this trail.

Best Times of Year: Spring brings untold blossoms to the Pa’ Rus trail, as well as the re-emergence of a wide variety of valley wildlife.

Crowds: Minimal. Beware of speeding bicyclists!

Don’t Miss:
- Up-close views of the Virgin River and humbling perspective on the Watchman and Bridge Mountain

- Some of the best wildlife-viewing opportunities in the Park. Hikers see jack rabbits, mule deer, wild turkeys, and the occasional fox along this path. For a chance to see bobcats, try the riverside between the 3rd and 4th bridge.

- Plentiful riverside access paths for quiet reading or peaceful communion with the River

Special Notes:
- Due to the flat terrain and wide, paved path, this trail is ideal for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers.

- The Pa’ Rus is the only trail in Zion where bikes are allowed. Please pedal cautiously, as pedestrians rarely expect bikes coming around the corner.

- The Pa’ Rus is the only trail in Zion where dogs are allowed. Please make sure to leash your dog on this trail to avoid run-ins with people and, especially, wildlife.
